12: Q & A with Mary Robinette Kowal

Tonight, we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America 's current Vice President, Campbell award winner and 2011 Hugo award winner, Mary Robinette Kowal.
Many topics were bandied about this evening in a spirited, free form question and answer session.

Topics of discussion included:

Novel ideas or short story ideas- How do you know which one you have?
Expanding a short story into a novel- How is that done?
Magic systems in Fantasy novels and one way they're developed.
How much background information readers need and want in a novel or story.
Professional puppetry and personal space when filming- How close is too close for your human co stars?

David Wolverton aka David Farland is a bestselling author of science fiction and fantasy, who served for many years as the coordinating judge for the Writer's of the Future Contest and as a creative writing instructor at Brigham Young University. As an instructor, he has trained many authors who have gone on to become NYT bestsellers themselves, including Stephenie Meyer, Brandon Sanderson, Brandon Mull, Eric Flint, Sean Williams, and many others.

He continues to educate young authors through regular intensive seminars and through his Daily Kick emails. In September 2010, he started David Farland's Writer's Groups, a writer's forum divided into subgroups by genre and experience.

In fourth grade, Mike's teacher caught him writing in class and forced his first public performance of an original story. The response inspired him to continue. He wrote fanfic for years, then returned to original works before taking a post-college hiatus.

In 2008, he took a detour and found himself one of two attendees at a signing by David Farland and Brandon Sanderson. He kept in touch with both, attended several of Dave's workshops, a few of Brandon's signings, and was recently tapped by Dave to help host the Authors' Advisory calls. Needless to say, he has a renewed desire to become a published author.
